Newhouse Speaks: David Almacy

Image
Earlier this semester our PRL 215 class had the pleasure of speaking with David Almacy who is the founder of CapitalGig LLC. He has over 20 years of experience in the intersection of public relations, digital media, government and public affairs. He previously served under George W. Bush where he was the White House Internet director, the first of its kind. He served as an official spokesman and directed online strategy. It was a fascinating conversation touching on the power of social media and especially today, how political campaigns use social media and the good and the bad that comes with it. The part of the conversation that stuck out to me the most was when he talked about his "bucket" theory. It's a theory about our individual social media presence and how to keep personal posts in one "bucket" while keeping our professional posts in a separate "bucket." He mentioned a story about a young woman who was interviewing for a job at David's cons...

Undestanding Betting Trends and Pitfalls to Avoid

Image
Source: The Action Network      We've reached the final blog of Lock It In! You're almost ready to pick some winners and do so responsibly. For today's blog we'll discuss betting trends, what they are, and some pitfalls to avoid when reading game lines. Let's get started!  1. Betting Trends, what are they?     When looking at a board of games there are a lot of numbers and statistics and it can be overwhelming at first glance. But, there's no need to be scared as the numbers are actually there to help bettor's understand where to put there money. To understand trends, we have to understand what bet percentages are, and how they differ from money percentages. A bet percentage (Bet%) indicates the percentage of bets on a certain line. It represents the number of bets that were placed on a line. For example, for tonight's Sunday Night Football game between the Saints and Bucs, the bet percentage is close to an even split. 52% of the bets are...

Following the Sharps and Understanding Line Movement

Image
Source:  https://ats.io/nfl/nfl-betting-odds-market-report/39141/       In last week's post we discussed betting Moneylines and Totals, today we'll discuss what line movement is and when you should use line movement as an indicator of sharp money. Let's get right into Week 3 of Lock It In!  1. Line Movement, What is it?     Each week when Vegas sets the lines and totals for the upcoming week of games, the lines change instantly. This doesn't happen by accident. Spreads and totals can easily be manipulated by big money gamblers that we refer to as "sharps." These are the gamblers who risk large amounts of money on a single game and as a result, these tend to be the professional gamblers. It can sometimes be a great advantage to see where the sharps are putting their money and may give recreational gamblers an edge. Let's look at an example. This week in the NFL there is a battle of unbeatens taking place in Nashville when the 5...

Making Money on Moneylines? It's Harder Than It Looks

Image
Source: SafestBettingSites.com     Last week we looked at bankroll management and discussed how betting favorites and underdogs works. This week, it's time to discuss what moneylines and totals are, how to bet them, and most importantly, how to be responsible while doing it. Lets get right to it!  1. What are Moneylines?       When you're looking to bet any game you have a lot of options. As we mentioned last week, you can pick teams to win or lose by a certain number of points. However, that's not the only way you can pick winners. A moneyline bet is one of the easiest bets you can make at a sportsbook. Simply put, it means betting a specific team to win the game. If the 49ers are playing the Chiefs and you think the Chiefs are going to win but you don't know by how much, you can simply bet Chiefs moneyline and hope they win the game by any amount of points. However, there's a catch. Betting moneylines can be difficult because the odds are very...

Units are a metric used by sports bettors that represent the size of someone's bet. In order to bet responsibly, it first helps to create a bankroll, or the amount of money you're willing to risk and lose while gambling. This should be an amount of money you are comfortable losing. The first rule of gambling is the mo...
